A traditional Italian Mediterranean wedding finds in Calabria the chance for a secluded, quiet, yet richly historic part of the country – where romance and intimacy meet the view of an enchanting landscape imbued with past.
The extreme South Western region, the “toe” of boot shaped Italy, overlooks the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Seas and is crossed lengthwise by a high central Appennine’s ridge, which slopes are richly covered by thick woods. Amazing panoramas characterize the steeple coastline, which wild beauty has no parallel.
The abundant heritage of remains dates back to the Roman Age, though Byzantine, Arab, Gothic and Baroque influences feature impressive buildings and paintings. One of the most recent finds concerns the Bronzes of Riace, two great bronze statues of warriors , original Greek masterpieces dating back to 5th Century B.C. ,deserving more than just a mention.
Ancient ruins, forgotten by time, may suddenly loom over the horizon, art treasures may show up at once in impoverished villages; you may see age old trees growing as tall as eucalyptus and face a crystal clear sea from the high rugged coast when reaching the inhospitable mountain area.
Everywhere, the villagers in their coloured traditional costumes and the large black skirts may introduce you to tasty, delicious food: fish, vegetables, cheese, sausages, salami and figs, all equally deserve a savoury mention.
Travelling inland you may drive past roadside fountains dispensing natural mineral water, and see old men playing cards outside a village bar, or children running in the narrow streets, or grandmothers knitting, weaving or embroidering while sitting on their doorsteps…
Pictures and postcards of living bygone days, a reward for the adventurer, and a memory to be cherished for a lifetime.
